Camp Layout: Little Britain
The Ruhleben racecourse was located between the industrial city of Spandau to the West and the residential area of Charlottenburg to the East. Train tracks ran to the south, and Spandau's smokestacks and factories were easily visible from the Camp. With very few places to go besides their barracks, the Ruhleben internees spent a good portion of each day walking up and down the Camp's promenade. The opening up of the racetrack and playing fields to the internees in March 1915 greatly increased the Camp's square footage.
